Veerle Van Den Eeckhout werd geboren op 15 november 1967 te Aalst (België). Na de basisschool (Sint-Jozefschool, Mere (Erpe-Mere)) en na de klassieke humaniora (Latijn-Wiskunde, Dames van Maria, Aalst, cum laude (+80%), Ranked First bij Finish in juni 1985) behaalde zij aan de Universiteit Gent (waar rechten een vijfjarige studie is) achtereenvolgens het diploma van kandidate in de rechten (1987, magna cum laude) en licentiate in de rechten (1990, optie “burgerlijk recht”, magna cum laude, Top 1% studenten alle afstudeeropties (groep van 231 studenten), Ranked First studenten afstudeeroptie "burgerlijk recht", keuzevakken: Medisch recht, Sociale voorzieningen. Afgestudeerd met de drie volgende scripties: Hardshipclausules in internationale contracten; Problemen van samenloop van burgerlijke en strafrechtelijke aansprakelijkheid; De impact van de staatshervorming op het jeugdbeschermingsrecht). Aan de Université Catholique Louvain behaalde zij een (Franstalig) diploma in sociologie (1991, magna cum laude, Top 1%, Ranked First). Nevenactiviteiten tijdens studies, o.a.: tijdens haar studies was Veerle Van Den Eeckhout jarenlang (van 1982 tot 1991) actief als monitor (na enkele jaren als hoofdmonitor) op speelpleinen (in Haaltert, Erpe-Mere en Brussel), in opvang van kinderen op kleuterscholen (in Louvain-La-Neuve) en als kinderanimator op Intersoc-familievakanties (in Zwitserland); lid Speelpleincommissie Gemeentebestuur Erpe-Mere; studentenjob bij BAC-Bank (Brussel). 
Van oktober 1991 tot en met december 1997 werkte zij onder een zesjarig assistentenmandaat met onderwijsopdracht voor Rechtsmethodiek (o.l.v. Prof. Dr. P. Van Orshoven) als assistente aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Centrum voor Rechtsmethodiek (voltijds). Op 16 december 1997 verdedigde zij aan deze universiteit haar proefschrift “De wet toepasselijk op het huwelijk en de huwelijksontbinding van nationaliteitsgemengde partners. De impulsen van de confrontatie van het I.P.R. met “gemengde” partnerrelaties voor de ontwikkeling van het conflictenrecht” (Ingediend juni 1997; voor doctoraten worden aan de rechtsfaculteit van de Kuleuven geen graden verleend). Van januari 1998 tot en met september 1998 werkte zij als doctor-assistente aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Centrum voor Rechtsmethodiek (voltijds). Van oktober 1998 tot en met september 1999 verving zij aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven professor dr. Senaeve voor het vak “Jeugdbeschermingsrecht”. Van oktober 1998 tot en met december 1998 werkte zij tevens bij het “Centrum voor Gelijkheid van Kansen en voor Racismebestrijding” in Brussel (voltijds), en vanaf januari 1999 tot en met december 2000 als universitair docente internationaal privaatrecht bij de Universiteit Leiden (voltijds). Sinds januari 2001 is zij aangesteld als universitair hoofddocente internationaal privaatrecht bij de Universiteit Leiden (voltijds). In 2003 ontving zij de onderwijsprijs voor beste werkcollegedocent van de rechtsfaculteit Leiden (en daarvoor en daarna is zij nog meermaals genomineerd - laatst nog in 2011). Sinds februari 2007 is zij tevens professor aan de Universiteit Antwerpen, titularis van het vak "Vergelijkend conflictenrecht/Vergelijkend en Europees internationaal privaatrecht". Zij is zowel lid van diverse commissies aan de Universiteit Leiden, Faculteit Rechtsgeleerdheid, als daarbuiten (bv.: jarenlang lidmaatschap van de NVVB-commissie internationaal privaatrecht (tot 2007); vast commissielid NWO-beoordelingscommissie MaGW Recht en Bestuur (subsidieronde Veni 2011)). Zij is fellow bij het onderzoeksprogramma "Securing the Rule of Law in a World of Multilevel Jurisdiction" evenals bij het onderzoeksprogramma "Vraagstukken van Vermogensrecht". Zij is tevens fellow bij de Dutch School for Human Rights en ambassador van het Minority Research Network. Zij is actief in tijdschriftredacties zoals het Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Europees Recht (rubriek "Europees internationaal privaatrecht") en Contemporary Readings in Law and Social Justice.  
Veerle Van Den Eeckhout was als experte betrokken in meerdere nationale en internationale projecten (nationale projecten zoals het project gecoördineerd door de Nederlandse Gezinsraad "Inventarisatie juridische situatie allochtone gezinnen. Signalement 3"; internationale projecten zoals de projecten gecoördineerd door de Université Libre de Bruxelles, België ("Judicial Cooperation in Civil Matters with Third Countries/Coopération Judiciaire en Matière Civile avec les Etats Tiers"); de Université Catholique de Louvain, België ("Reflexive Governance in the Public Interest, 6th European Framework Programme in Research and Development. Fundamental Rights Governance"); de Universidad de Valencia, Spanje (DG Justice, Freedom and Security, "The application of foreign law by judicial and non-judicial authorities in Europe", rapporteur voor Nederland), vaak gesubsidieerd door de Europese Commissie. Ze heeft conferenties georganiseerd (bv. De conferentie "The importance of comparative law for the creation of a European area of Freedom, Justice and Security") en heeft zelf vele toespraken gehouden op nationale en internationale conferenties (o.a. in Antwerpen, Brussel, Leuven, Leiden, Bonn, New York, Rabat, Onati). Ze heeft essays, masterscripties en post-masterscripties begeleid en was jurylid voor PhD. Ze heeft zowel Nederlandstalig als Engelstalig onderwijs verzorgd op alle academische niveaus (dit voor wat betreft het gehele terrein van het ipr: alle onderdelen van zowel procesrecht als toepasselijk recht, alle onderdelen van zowel familierecht als vermogens-/handelsrecht), daarin begrepen onderwijs in de advanced llm-programma's "International Business Law" en "European Business Law", evenals "Post Academisch Onderwijs".

Short English version
Prof. Dr. Veerle Van Den Eeckhout was born in Aalst (Belgium) in November 1967. Since 1999, she has been domiciled in the Netherlands. After Secondary School (Latin-Mathematics, cum laude, Ranked First by Finish in June 1985), Veerle Van Den Eeckhout studied Law (Candidate level finished in June 1987, magna cum laude, Master level finished in June 1990, magna cum laude, top 1% students all options (class of 231 students), Ranked First students Option "Civil Law", Universiteit Gent, Belgium) and Sociology (Finished in June 1991, magna cum laude, top 1%, Ranked First, Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium). In 1997 she defended her PhD in  Private International  Law at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium). She worked at the Faculty of Law of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium as an assistant (October 1991 - December 1997, full-time), a doctor-assistant (January 1998 - September 1998, full-time) and a substitute-professor (October 1998 - September 1999; responsible for the course "Youth Potection Law", attended by students of Law, Criminology and Psychology). From October 1998 until December 1998 she also worked at the Centre for Equal Opportunities and Opposition to Racism in Brussels, Belgium (full-time). At the Universiteit Leiden, the Netherlands, she has been working as an assistant professor in Private International Law (January 1999 - December 2000, full-time) and, since January 2001, as an associate professor in Private International Law (full-time). In 2003 she was awarded the prize for best seminar-teacher at the faculty of law of Leiden. Since February 2007, she has also been appointed as a Professor (holder of the course "Comparative and European Private International Law") at the Universiteit Antwerpen (Belgium). Veerle Van Den Eeckhout has been involved as an expert in several national and international projects (national projects such as the project coordinated by the Nederlandse Gezinsraad "Inventarisatie Juridische situatie allochtone gezinnen. Signalement 3" (on the legal status of foreign families in the Netherlands); international projects such as the projects coordinated e.g. by the Université Libre de Bruxelles , Belgium ("Judicial Cooperation in Civil Matters with Third Countries/Coopération Judiciaire en Matière Civile avec les Etats Tiers"); the Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium  ("Reflexive Governance in the Public Interest, 6th European Framework Programme in Research and Development. Fundamental Rights Governance"); the Universidad de Valencia, Spain  (DG Justice, Freedom and Security, "The application of foreign law by judicial and non-judicial authorities in Europe", country reporter for the Netherlands), often subsidised by the European Commission. She has organised several conferences (e.g. a conference on "The importance of comparative law for the creation of a European area of  Freedom,  Justice and  Security") and has presented herself speeches at national and international conferences (e.g. in Antwerpen,  Brussel,  Leuven, Leiden, Bonn, New York, Rabat, Onati). She is a fellow at the Graduate School of Leiden University (Research programmes "Securing the rule of law in a world of multilevel jurisdiction" and "Constitutionalisation, transnationalisation and the unity of Dutch private law"), a fellow at the Dutch School for Human Rights Research and an ambassador of the "Minority Research Network". She has been teaching courses in Dutch and English on all academic levels, including courses in the advanced llm-programmes "International Business Law" and "European Business Law" and "Post Academisch Onderwijs". She has supervised essays, master theses and post-master theses and has been a member of jury for PhD.
