Ciara Smyth is gastonderzoeker en docent bij het Instituut voor Immigratierecht. Zij promoveert op het onderwerp "the compatibility of the Common European Asylum System with the rights of the child".
Zij behoort sinds 2003 tevens tot de staf van de rechtenfaculteit van NUI Galway.
Ciara Smyth heeft haar LL.M. in Human Rights and Conflict Resolution met lof behaald aan de Queen's University Belfast.
Zij heeft na haar afstuderen deelgenomen aan verschillende projecten op het terrein van mensenrechten, zowel in Ierland als in Cambodja, alwaar zij twee jaar op het Cambodjaanse ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken heeft gewerkt.
Na haar terugkeer in Ierland heeft Ciara Smyth gewerkt als “ Legal officer”  voor het Iers Committee van overzeese gevangenen (the Irish Commission for Prisoners Overseas).

Van 2001-2003 heeft zij gewerkt bij het UNHCR, waar zij met name actief was op het gebied van trainingen over vluchtelingenrecht bij betrokken instellingen. Daar fungeert zij nog steeds als trainingconsulent  op het gebied van asielstatus bepaling. Tevens is Ciara Smyth lid van de Immigrant Council of Ireland’s Legal Working Group en levert zij regelmatig een bijdrage aan het publieke debat over immigratie en asiel.
